...make better strategic and operational decisions by working with our consultants...

VOLUNTEER CONSULTANT PROGRAM

The objective of the Volunteer Consultant Program is to leverage the knowledge of our network of non-profit organization staff and volunteers. In doing this we will build the capacity of non-profit organizations to achieve their mission-driven results. The program will consist of a significant, unique, cross-disciplinary knowledge network of colleagues. They will have expertise, and a shared interest in the non-profit community. This means that people will be able to access a growing and collaborative hub of expertise.

Through their participation in the program, staff and volunteers in non-profit organizations will be able to make better strategic and operational decisions by working with our consultants because the information provided by our consultants will be grounded on a solid knowledge base.

The crux of this model is that there are many people who simply have a need to know strategic or operational information. This program creates a medium where one can get answers from an expert, via the Internet. One of the lessons that have been learned from the Web is that automated answers alone frequently provide too much information. Amidst the returned answers to questions, is a lack of context and customized precision.

A second lesson that has been learned from the growing discipline of knowledge management is that knowledge has an explicit side and a harder to articulate tacit dimension. An exchange of information through an automated process, which also has a link to a human expert knowledge provider, typically provides greater benefits than a merely automated system. People place a higher value on more knowledgeable, timely, relevant, and competent answers to their questions.

Many people have expertise and content, which others would like to access, but previously there has not been a medium through which they can easily connect with these experts. Now the people with the knowledge that they are willing to exchange with others can find an outlet and the people seeking expertise can be connected to the experts.

“WHAT’S NEW” FEATURE

The “What’s New” feature of the TOTAL Web Site will focus on providing the users with important information on issues of interest to the non-profit community. It will include up-to-date information on new programs or services in the community, new or changed government regulations, excerpts from recently added resources that non-profits can access for free or for a fee, an events calendar which lists upcoming non-profit events and conferences, and non-profit success stories.

... a forum where people working in similar disciplines or with similar interests can discuss different subjects and consult each other if they have questions.

LISTSERVS/EMAIL DISCUSSION GROUPS (under development)

Currently, many discussion groups and Listservs are present on the Internet. The purpose of these groups is to provide a forum where people working in similar disciplines or with similar interests can discuss different subjects and consult each other if they have questions. These groups also enable professionals to access a network of other skilled professionals and promote a collegial approach to problem solving.

While other discussion groups exist, two will nevertheless be established on the TOTAL Web Site. The first discussion group will provide the visitors to the web site with a forum to exchange ideas, network with colleagues, ask and answer questions, and problem solve with other members of the non-profit professional and volunteer community.

The second discussion group will be targeted at the volunteer consultants so that they can access a network of other skilled professionals. It will also provide them with a collegial approach to problem solving.
